MY SALVATION STORY AND WALK OF FAITH: I grew up in a Christian Home with both my parents born again and Spirit filled. My parents, who were the founders of an International NGO and the Calvary Foundation Hospital, ran a non-denominational fellowship which held Sunday morning and evening chapel services and Wednesday bible study meetings.
I and my siblings were compelled to attend and grew up fellowshipping and serving God in this manner. I grew to love the God and my desire was to please and to serve Him.
My parents mostly conducted the fellowship, and with time, they began allowing my eldest sister, Elpida to hold brief when they were unavoidably absent. Other times they asked my other elder siblings to hold brief for them.
Later, I too was asked on some occasions to handle the fellowship. It was a beautiful and exciting experience for us all and it gave us the opportunity to develop ourselves in public speaking and mostly, the discipline to study the bible for ourselves.
I’m always grateful to my parents for raising us with the fear of the Lord. However, though my parents were Christians and we (the children) grew up believing in God and reading the bible, I didn’t have a personal relationship with the Lord.
I was not born again, and I didn’t know anything about salvation. How I got saved: As a little girl, I and my siblings most times, stayed up at night gazing at the stars and adoring the works of God.
On one of those evenings, my eldest sister, Elpida spoke to me about being born again and about salvation through Jesus Christ. She opened the Bible and showed Romans 10:9-10 which says: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation”. She told me I had to confess Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour.
Because I loved God and wanted to do His will, I received the word she spoke by faith and that day, I still remember it like it was yesterday. I was 12 years old… I gave my heart to the Lord Jesus Christ and received salvation into my Spirit.
Immediately I felt an unusual joy and happiness in me. I didn’t really understand it, but I just knew I was a child of God.
I remain grateful to Elpida for leading me to Jesus. I became born again and my life continued.
MY SEARCH FOR DEEPER LEVELS IN GOD. I watched TBN, the 700 Club, especially the program ‘Turning Point’.
I also watched preachers like Benny Hinn, and Kenneth Copeland, and later Joyce Meyer. The testimonies of salvation and great deliverances especially on turning point stirred my passion for the Lord.
I loved God even more and longed for a way to serve Him; I longed for a new dimension in my walk with God. In my 5th grade (SS2) in the secondary school, I met someone for the first time, who was just as much in love with God and could boldly talk about Jesus without caring about what anybody said.
They regarded those who spoke about Jesus as “Jew men”, howbeit she didn’t care. We became very good friends and I found out she was filled with the Holy Spirit and also spoke in tongues.
The very thing I had been praying for. We shared the word of God, prayed together, sang together… and our fellowship was just beautiful.
After my secondary school, I kept searching for deeper grounds in God. I wanted to speak in tongues.
I began reading books of great men of God like Smith Wigglesworth, Kathrine Kulman, and my desire to serve God increased. I was looking for something more than what I had been learning in my parent’s fellowship or anywhere else.
After my secondary school, I started a training program in a school, and there, I met two tongue talking ladies who were sisters. They were full of the Holy Spirit and of the word of God like I had never seen.
My quest for the source of their inspiration brought me closer to them, and they told me about the church they attended - Christ Embassy. From then on, I sought for a way to attend the church… but I had gained admission in the university, and the time to resume had come.
I had a dream of studying oversees for my university education and had taken the SAT and TOFEL exams for international studies. With the help of my parents, I got a scholarship to study in an American university based in Greece.
I was very excited about it and we all prepared for my travel. The days drew nearer and I had just two days left before travelling.
Everything was set. However, deep within my spirit, I didn’t think it was what God wanted for me and I didn’t want to travel.
My parents had been praying and deliberating on the issue. I think they too were sensitive to the leading of God.
Amazingly, the day before I would travel, my dad walked up to me and decisively told me I wasn’t going to travel, as he didn’t feel it was the right time and that God wasn’t leading him to allow me. I was relieved and gladly stayed and pursued my university education within the country.
My Christian parents had been praying for the guidance of the Holy Spirit with regards to the school I would attend and the people I would meet. I prayed to God to have good people around me, and beyond my imagination God brought specific people into my life on Campus that would change my life forever.
The first person was Sister Suzzy Nkemakolam. I had gained admission as a freshman in school, and for security reasons, my parents insisted I stayed in the campus accommodation.
Two students were allocated to one single bed. That meant I had to share a bed with someone I didn’t know and I was particularly concerned, so I prayed to God to be placed with a Christian.
God heard my prayer and even gave me more than I asked for. God payed attention to the details that concerned me, to the point that he chose who would be my bed mate.
While people were being allocated to their beds in the hostel, the student that I was to share with for some reason decided to sell the space and this Sister Sussy Nkemakolam bought the space from her and became my bed mate in my first year. This Suzzy happened to be a member of the Campus Ministry of Christ Embassy Church; the very church I sought a way to attend.
This was pre-destination at work in my life and because I could see the hand of God in my life, I knew I had found the treasure I had been looking for. With the influence of Sister Suzzy, who was a leader in the Fellowship and a member of the Choir, I joined the Believers Loveworld Fellowship and that’s where the story of my long searched walk with my loving Father all began.
It gets more interesting. I’ll tell you about it in Part 2 of my salvation Story.
